Password Tips

Best Practices

To reduce the risk of compromise via social engineering, brute force, or dictionary attacks:

  • Use a unique password for every important account.
  • Create strong passphrases (10+ chars) using upper/lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
  • Avoid names of family, friends, or pets.
  • Don’t include easy-to-guess data (addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, SSNs).
  • Avoid single dictionary words.
  • Don’t rely on browser-stored passwords unless protected by a master password.
  • Avoid logging into sensitive accounts on public or untrusted networks/devices.
  • Prefer encrypted protocols (HTTPS/SFTP) over HTTP/FTP.
  • When traveling, consider a private VPN or SSH tunnel to encrypt outbound traffic.
  • Enable MFA wherever available; store recovery codes securely.

Note: Even if traffic is intercepted, strong encryption (TLS/VPN/SSH) prevents credential theft.
